Stolen from all over my flist (with a few tweaks):

In honor of All Hallow's Eve, I'm inviting trick-or-treaters to my 'door'. Comment "trick-or-treat" to this post and you will get a surprise in your 'bag' on the 31st. Treats can be anything you'd like - my bubbling cauldron can serve up icons, wallpapers, or drabbles.

The trick is you have to prompt me in order to receive your treat. The cauldron needs ingredients, after all. *evil laugh*

The more "houses" to visit the more fun it'll be, so go ahead, open your journal and help spread the fun!

While I'm trying not to get frantic finishing my [community profile] sga_santa story, here's a little meme from various places on my flist:

If you were asked to pick one scene, one shot, one detail, one moment of some kind out of all the things I've made and say "This, this, for whatever reason, I remember, this is something that struck home with me, that I wanted to keep," what would it be?
danceswithgary: (McShep - Not So Much)
So there's another meme going around, http://iwl.me/ , which pretends to analyze your writing and equates it to some famous writer. *rolls eyes and grabs salt shaker*

I'd love to take a look at their algorithms. I suspect it has everything to do with average number of words in a sentence and the average length of words, and nothing to do with context or content. I suppose it could also incorporate a grammar check and readability statistics, which again have no correlation to actual content.

The stories (entire, not pieces) that I pasted in last night were from the last year or so, and eight out of ten said I was Arthur Conan Doyle. To be honest, that means nothing to me without some sort of comparison chart.

After reading a few more posts on my flist this morning, I went back and ran some random checks on my stories in chronological order, because I was curious whether my 'style' has changed through the years. I pasted two paragraphs from the beginning of each to keep the sample points as consistent as possible.

My very first story, written almost four years ago, Desired versus Required = Dan Brown

One of my most popular (and angsty) stories of 2006, Day 403 = Arthur Conan Doyle

Another popular heartbreaker from early 2007, Without You = Margaret Atwood

A Harlequin Historical from 2007, Destiny's Savage Heart = James Joyce

A second Harlequin Historical from 2007, Destiny Wears A Disguise = Oscar Wilde

A movie pastiche from 2007, Not Of This Earth = Stephen King

A second person angst fest from 2008, Adrenaline = Stephen King

A popular romance from 2008, Screen Savor = Stephen King

An action/adventure from 2008, The Rarer Action = Dan Brown

My most popular humor story (short all-dialogue), You Light Up My Life = Stephen King

I started getting bored so when I 'analyzed' a 2009 [profile] artword entry, Beyond Roses, I tried something a little different. Two paragraphs from the beginning = Stephen King, two from the middle = Chuck Pahlaniuk and the entire story = Arthur Conan Doyle.

Right, I'm done. What it all comes down to is that I write like me.

*rolls eyes at waste of time and goes back to writing*

If you'd like me to write you a drabble as a little holiday gift from me to you, just give me a pairing (Clark/Lex or John/Rodney) and a prompt and I'll give it a whirl!

I didn't think she'd mind. :-D

Meme: Post a link to your entries on this day two years ago, last year, nine months ago, six months ago, three months ago and one month ago. If there was no entry on that day, link the closest date.

Two years ago today, I posted the conclusion to Do You Believe In Magic?.

A year ago today, I was thinking an online quiz was pretty cool and posted part 14/15 of Nothing But Air.

Nine months ago today, I posted a list of 12 stories I'd written over the holidays.

Six months ago today, I posted the final listing for the Twisting the Twilight Zone Challenge.

Three months ago today, I posted Crimson Barrens and kicked off regularly posting my fanart.

A month ago today, I posted McShep icons and artwork.

I will be replying shortly to the wonderfully supportive comments on my whiny woe-is-me-someone-made-me-feel-bad post, but first I'm going to play.

Gakked from a number of LJ's: Post a single sentence from each WIP you have (or as many as you want). No context/explanations.

It sounds like fun. I'm going to spend a little time poking through my files and revisiting all those unfinished stories I've been accumulating. You may notice you've never seen a lot of these before. I don't always post stories in multiple parts and leave my readers dangling in the breeze while I flutter to the next pretty flower file.

BTW, I won't be demanding comments before I finish anything. That's not how I operate. To be honest, I want to write every one of these but all too often the words won't cooperate. If I stuck to one story at a time until I finished it there wouldn't be 5 fics in my posted WIP list taunting my readers, but there would be a lot less than 127 completed fics with approximately 960,000 words posted in my LJ for everyone to read. There also wouldn't be any rec lists posted, no icons or art, and I wouldn't be beta'ing for other people. I think I'll stick with my current methods. *shrugs*

Not all of them and in no particular order and not always the opening. )

Desktop meme seen in many places on my flist:

RULES:
- Anyone who looks at this meme has to post their own desktop in their LiveJournal.
- Explain in a few sentences why you’re using that wallpaper.
- Don’t change your wallpaper before doing this. The point is to see what you had up!

When my laptop died and I switched to this one, I took the opportunity to reconfigure my desktop from the grey/blue theme I'd been using for a few years. I'd seen some lovely pictures at APOD during a challenge, so I went back and found the painting I'm using. I then found a matching theme for Firefox, Nasa Night Launch, which I think looks quite lovely with my LJ theme. I really spent too much time playing with my colors. :-D

I'm sorting through notes and pictures and feeling a wee bit bored, so I'm offering this meme as seen in a few places on my flist:

LJ's kind of a weird place where we do get these great glimpses into people's lives, but they tend to be very... shielded in some ways. Sometimes that's intentional, sometimes not, but I figure there's got to be stuff people want to ask each other. Something small (what's my favorite drink?) or something big (omg, are we related!?), go ahead and post a question about something you've been dying to ask me. I'll try to answer it, but will explain why I can't or don't want to if I don't.

In my first post, I actually believed writing was in the distant future.

I posted my first story eleven days later.

I've written a few other things since then.

Total fics completed since start (Sept 2006): 113
Total words posted since start (Sept 2006): 885701

The Powder outline is still in the bunny pile.

Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan:

Post a single sentence from each WIP you have (or as many as you want to pick). No context, no explanations. No more than one sentence! This is not all of them, but those that will be finished first. :-)

1. I sat in my apartment for days trying to figure out what it was all about and when I stopped being someone I could like and all I could come up with was that the last time I was truly happy was here, in Willoughby.

2. 'Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I'm exactly who you think I am and that means you need to be very, very, careful' was written in every arrogant line of the whipcord-lean body that hinted at dark dealings.

3. "Probably not the best incentive for me to try to get you back to civilization."

4. Rodney looks at the door of the motel left half-open and huffs, "Aren't you forgetting something?"

5. Hamilton had always claimed my bald head was what saved me from ending up like the majority of humankind did after the plague.

6. "The thing is, a lot of fairly important people are under the impression that those goons chasing us...are the good guys."

7. Rolling over to face Kyle, AJ grinned. "Hey, I'd tell you, but then I'd have to kill you."

8. "Why does Sheppard let him go through the ring of the Ancestors with the team if he can't be trusted?"

9. It tingles under his fingertips and he thinks about waking in his bed, naked, blood on the sheets but no visible wound.

10. Clark fell in love with the mountains after the plains of Kansas.

11. "Uh-oh, Rodney, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore."

12. "MALP reports Earth-normal temperature, gravity and atmosphere, General."

13. Rodney has no sympathy for Sheppard being stunned in the balls.

14. He watches the Impala leave and says a prayer not meant to be heard by human ears that they find what they need and wonders if they'll meet again.

15. John looked down at the set of keys in his hand and weighed them...a slight burden for a change, certainly not too heavy to bear.

16. They don't know whose hands reached out first, they only care that they're together.

17. Hissing as the silk brushed against his tender flesh, he reflected that burning to death ranked high on the pain scale, probably the most unpleasant method of expiring...except perhaps for that time he'd been accused of being a witch and was 'pressed' to confess.

18. The skin beneath his fingers reddened and then began to bleed while he looked out over the frozen lake, and thought about being different.

...make me write anything, what would you make me write? Could be as vague as a fandom or as specific as a plot summary or even a request to get into gear and finish a specific WIP. (idea ganked from [livejournal.com profile] prehistoric_sea)

It's not as though I don't already have umpteen bunnies hopping around on my hard drive...and leaving pellet presents behind...but I really am interested in what you'd like to read (or see for that matter if you want art).

No promises, but I do tend to pick up on these requests as witnessed by the number of people I credit for prompts/plots/requests in my story notes. *grin*

Can you tell I'm getting ready for a retired husband and ski season? Starting Saturday I will be alone from 7:30 AM to 9:30 PM every day until around the end of March. I'm going to have a lot of uninterrupted time to write and manip. Come to think of it, it's not a huge change from now, but I'll take it as an excuse. *rolls eyes at self*
danceswithgary: (CLex - Two Years)
From [livejournal.com profile] bagheera_san:

The one in which you post the first sentence of the first story you posted each month this year:

January: Straighten Up and Fly Right

"Not that I don't appreciate your prompt assistance in pulling me out of that building before it collapsed from the explosion, Superman, but was it really necessary to detour under the sprinkler system? Twice?"

February: The Kent Identity

The first thing he noticed in his darkness was how hard it was to breathe.

March: A Semi-Precious Helix

You can buy anything you want on the streets of Metropolis for the right price.

April: Bedtime Stories

"I've had it with you, Logan! Your inability to obey orders...."

May: Lightning Strikes

Rain wasn't in the forecast but, after all the odd autumn weather this section of the country had been suffering, it didn't surprise Lex to see the night sky flaring in the distance.

June: Two Years From Tomorrow

Dear New Tenant, Welcome to the nicest apartment I've ever moved out of.

July: Aumenti Nel Sole

Polygon rainbows danced across his desk, mocking, puzzles without solutions.

August: The Seeds of Change

The barbed wire patrolled by a line of men dressed in camouflage and carrying armament better suited for battlefields than cornfields should not have been such a shock to Lex.

September: By A Thread

"Colonel Sheppard, we have an unscheduled offworld activation. It's Dr. McKay's IDC."

October: Staring At A Hurricane

It wasn't supposed to happen.

November: Screen Savor

It was almost five weeks after the annoyingly perfect Dr. 'Call me Rod' McKay returned to his universe when John began to notice that his Rodney had changed.

December: The Trouble With Trebuchets

"Oops?"

Cool, I had at least one new story every month!
