All I did was buy 2 - 1GB simms and swap out the 512K simm. The cost was $60.00 for the memory compatible with my Compaq C300. The processor was fine, just needed more RAM.
I picked up this laptop last year at Circuit City for under $700.00. They've got some decent deals out there these days depending on what you're going for. I wouldn't play games on this one, but it's fine for word processing and the rest.
