The Adventure Started Here

The kitchen was in an uproar, the same uproar that was also occurring in the laundry, the library, the stables and the throne room, and in fact, in every one of the two hundred and thirty-seven possible locations for an uproar in the castle. When the UDKM arrived with the heavy silver tray, she was immediately ordered to report to the throne room to provide any additional information she had to support the LUHM's story. Shrugging, the UDKM dropped the heavy silver tray on the long wooden kitchen table with a clatter and ambled off in the general direction of the throne room.

Reflecting that it would be almost impossible to miss finding the throne room that day due to the shouts of King Rick and the wailing of Queen Hannah, the UDKM peeked through the doorway before entering. She had found from experience that entering a room where knights might be hanging about swinging swords at random required great care to avoid encountering any of the very sharp sword edges. One of her favorite kirtles had a rather long slit in it received the day she'd learned that particular lesson. She'd counted herself fortunate that she hadn't ended up with a rather long slit in her.

"Well, come in here, girl! Don't dawdle, you're making their majesties wait!" One of the knights, fortunately not swinging a sword randomly at that particular moment, grabbed the UDKM by her upper left arm and yanked her into the throne room. At her appearance, the LUHM, who was quite hoarse from all the shouting that had been going on, pointed and screeched, "It was her!"

Looking around the room in puzzlement, the UDKM even looked over her shoulder at the knight holding her arm before she replied, completely baffled, "Me? What did I do?"

King Rick's royal voice was commanding as he explained. "The LUHM informs us that you were the one who found her in Princess Angeline's bedroom and set her free."

Ducking her head in deference, the UDKM answered, "Yes, Your Majesty."

"The LUHM also informed us that two dragons were responsible for the abduction and that they flew away with the princess." Queen Hannah's voice was a trifle softer, but still held the weight of command. "What do you know about that?"

Eyes wide at the idea that she'd had anything to do with Princess Angeline's dragon-napping, the UDKM shook her head frantically. "I don't know anything, Your Majesty. I just deliver the milk and strawberry jam toast to Princess Angeline, that's all." Horrified, the UDKM found herself babbling to the king and queen. "Milk and toast, every morning. Sometimes, it's juice and waffles, but for the most part it's milk and toast. With strawberry jam...or grape when we're out of strawberry...."

"Enough!" The king's shout was enough to end the inane babbling, earning the UDKM's unending gratitude. "You are obviously able to think before running around shouting, unlike some others I could name." King Rick leveled a royal frown at the cringing LUHM. "You will accompany my knights on their quest to rescue Princess Angeline. She will need someone to take care of her on the trip back."

The UDKM was particularly proud of the fact that her knees only shook the tiniest bit at the unexpected command. However, her voice did have a tendency to squeak just a little. "Me, Your Majesty? But I'm just the UDKM and wouldn't the ...."

"Your reward will be a promotion. The alternative will be time spent in the dungeon since disobeying a direct order from the king or queen is...treason." Queen Hannah sounded almost bored as she informed the UDKM that she really had no choice in the matter. She waved the unfortunate servant away and went back to dramatically weeping and wailing while King Rick patted her hand and said, "There, there, my dear. She'll be restored to us in no time."

"Begging your pardon, Your Majesty?"

"What is it, now!"

"Which of the dragons took the princess? There are quite a few scattered here and there nowadays. I was wondering whether to pack for hot or cold weather."

The throne room became deathly silent at the UDKM's question. King Rick frowned and looked at each of his knights, who stopped randomly swinging their swords long enough to shrug their shoulders. The knight standing directly behind the UDKM spoke up. "I must admit that it would be helpful to know what direction to ride in when we leave, Your Majesty."

Resting his steely gaze on the trembling LUHM, the king thundered, "Well? You never told us which dragons!"

"You didn't ask, Your Majesty. I mean, I would have except you asked all those other questions and I got confused and then I forgot...."

"Silence! Tell us which dragons!"

"I'm sorry, Your Majesty, but am I supposed to be silent or talk, because I always want to do exactly as your majesties require because the dungeons are particularly nasty this time of year, not that they're nice at any time...." The LUHM went on talking nineteen to the dozen all the way out of the throne room as she was dragged away by one of the knights who had shoved his swinging sword firmly into his scabbard.

A heavy hand came down on the UDKM's shoulder and the knight behind her swung her around to face him. She could actually see the hint of a smile beneath the heavy black moustache that obscured most of his mouth. "Come along, girl. We'll need some common sense on this quest. You'll do."
