After I read [livejournal.com profile] roxymissrose's drabble I started thinking about Stranger In A Strange Land which lead to Time Enough for Love both Heinlein novels having an impact on my formative years. I didn't read them until the early seventies because they were deemed adult literature(sex!), but the concepts were mind-blowing to an impressionable 15-year-old mind. They and a few other evil free-thinking SF novels were probably responsible for changing a priggish oldest of five goody-two-shoes into someone who could move in with her lover(5 years older! horrors!) three years later, defying parents and convention in a very conservative town. Of course, convention did eventually rear its ugly head eight months afterward when we were married in a family-only ceremony that I don't even have pictures of, something I do regret 31 years later.

I think I'm going to have to pull out my tattered paperbacks and read both again. In the back of my mind, I equate Valentine Michael Smith to Clark and Lazarus Long to Lex. Extending the 'stranger raised by another culture' theme, Smith = Mowgli = Tarzan is a fiction I'm now rolling around in the back of my head with Kal-El returning to Krypton after being raised by 'savages' with incomprehensible customs and lifestyles.

Lex as Lazarus Long is another concept I'd like to pursue with the trials and tribulations of life as an immortal and the genetic/political implications of his mutation being inheritable.

All that from the title of a 100-word drabble. Hunh.
