Just saw the final specialist for my missing voice and he confirmed that, due to polyps and extensive scar tissue, my vocal cords are too badly damaged to function as designed. It's the result of years of coughing and throat-clearing due to allergies and asthma and bronchitis - the virus I caught last November was the one that finished me off. The short recovery I had when I managed the last set of fics was a fluke.
If my chronic coughing and throat-clearing could be eliminated for 5-6 months, the specialist would attempt surgery, but as it is, I'd just break apart the repairs and end up with zero voice instead of the occasional raspy whisper I can eke out. An amplifier was discussed, but with the amount of damage I have, I'd end up straining my throat muscles trying to compensate. Since I'm no longer working, I can live without that.
So that's it. What I recorded was a last hurrah.
To add to the lovely day I'm having, I visited the restroom at the doctor's office and when I washed my hands, I left my wedding and engagement rings on the sink. When I called the office (Gary called - I whispered) no one had turned them in and they weren't in the rest room. My only hope is that the office is huge and the person who checked really didn't talk to everyone. I'll call again tomorrow.
Life really sucks right now. I'm going to work on finding something positive, but it may take a while. *sigh*
