I've been so sad this season because it feels like everyone's moved on from Clex to... Clark/Lois and Clark/Chloe or out of Smallville altogether. And although I've been mainlining on old fic, I really wanted to read something new.

I have the feeling that future Lex sent Clark back expecting that Clark would save the world by not saving him. Trapped in a cycle of destruction with no way out. But young Clark finds a better way and now everything can change. Wonderful!

That's certainly one of the ways I left it open for interpretation. Knowing the innate goodness of Clark, Lex had to know letting him die would be unlikely, but the needs of the many might make it happen.

I love that Lex still trusts Clark enough to send him back in time to fix their friendship in the past. In those few sentences, you can feel how much Lex wishes they kept their friendship.

"I know it's kind of hard to believe...but you did."
